Kazuo Ishiguro Wins Nobel Prize in Literature
This year’s Nobel Prize in Literature has been awarded to Japanese-born English writer Kazuo Ishiguro. The Nobel Committee made the announcement on October 5th. Born in Nagasaki, Ishiguro moved to the UK with his family when he was five. He only returned to Japan in his thirties. However, growing up in a Japanese family with memories of Japan gave him the incentive to write. His first two novels are set in Japan. He is best known for “The Remains of the Day,” which won Britain’s prestigious Man Booker Prize. The Nobel Committee said Ishiguro “has uncovered the abyss beneath our illusory sense of connection with the world.” The announcement immediately put Ishiguro in the spotlight in Japan. Sales of his translated works have also surged.

Hitachi Develops Non-painful Breast Cancer Screening
Electronics giant Hitachi has developed a painless screening technology for breast cancer. The new method uses ultrasound to detect tumors with greater accuracy than mammography screening. Mammography is currently the most common testing method. However, it requires breasts to be flattened and can cause significant pain. It also uses X-rays, delivering low dose radiation. With Hitachi’s system, examinees simply lie face down on a table and place their breasts in a container of water. It can detect early stage cancer using 360 degree ultrasound beams without pain or radiation. Breast cancer has become one of the leading causes of female mortality in many countries. Early detection is crucial. Hitachi intends to develop a practical application for the technology by 2020 following clinical trials.

Premium Friday Campaign to Start in Late February
Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has announced its Premium Friday campaign will start on February 24th. The initiative is designed to increase personal consumption. During the campaign, the ministry is calling for companies to finish work early on the last Friday of each month. This is intended to create spare time employees can use for leisure. The ministry is also encouraging the retail, travel and service industries to launch special events. It is hoping to boost spending by creating opportunities for people to enjoy shopping, traveling and dining. If successful, the campaign could lead Japan out of its persistent deflation. Unfortunately, many companies tend to be busy at the end of the month. Leaving the office early on Friday may simply create more overtime work on other days. Some people also question the campaign, saying spending will not increase without a pay rise.

Trump Triumphs in US Presidential Election
Republican Donald Trump defeated Democrat Hillary Clinton in the US presidential election held on November 8th. Clinton had been aiming to become America’s first female leader. Both candidates were hit by major scandals and suffered low popularity ratings. While most opinion polls predicted a comfortable win for Clinton, Trump pulled off a stunning catch-up victory. The Republican was strongly criticized for his inflammatory remarks on issues such as immigration and terrorism. However, he used his status as a political outsider to build support among working class white people. Many of these voters were deeply dissatisfied with the Obama administration. Trump has pledged to make drastic policy revisions as part of his “America first” strategy. However, since winning, he has softened his stance on various issues. Despite this, many countries remain deeply concerned about his views on foreign policy and security.

Quake Evacuees Suffer Economy Class Syndrome
According to media reports, evacuees in Kumamoto and Oita are suffering from economy class syndrome. The regions have experienced many tremors since April 14th, including a magnitude 7.3 quake. Economy class syndrome occurs when people remain in the same position for long periods. This can cause blood clots to form in the veins of the legs. The condition can be fatal if the clots block blood flow. It can be prevented by not sleeping in a sitting position, walking and drinking sufficient fluids. However, the risk is growing among evacuees as many are living in limited spaces such as cars. The government is trying to raise awareness of the issue and preventive methods. Businesses and individuals have also joined medical workers to address the problem. This includes distributing items such as compression stockings and cardboard beds.

AI Defeats Top Go Professional
An artificial intelligence recently defeated the world’s top professional Go player in a match held in Korea. Developed by a Google company, AlphaGo won four out of the five games played. Go originated in China thousands of years ago. Although its rules are simple, there are many more possible moves than other board games such as chess. It also requires intuition and feel. This complexity has made it difficult for computers to master. AlphaGo’s success reportedly depended on a new AI technology called deep learning. The technology allows it to learn like a human brain, using examples and experience to make better moves. AlphaGo’s victory surprised many people and raised interest in both Go and AI. Rapid advances in AI technology mean it could soon be used to address various problems in society. This includes major challenges in the medical and industrial fields.

Japanese Retail Electricity Market Opens to Full Competition
On April 1st, the Japanese retail electricity market was fully opened to new entrants. Previously, regional power companies were exclusively permitted to sell electricity to households. However, other companies can now enter the market and consumers can choose their power provider. This means they could select a company that prioritizes solar, wind or other renewable energy sources. If consumers want to switch their supplier, they must first change their meter to a new type. However, they can still use the existing wiring. The competitive system is expected to lower electricity bills and lead to a wider variety of service options. There are some concerns about the reliability of new providers and possible contractual problems. However, the government is requiring all retailers to register their services and fully explain contracts. Customers will also be protected if their supplier unexpectedly ceases operation.
