Yoshinori Ohsumi Awarded Nobel Prize

In October, Professor Yoshinori Ohsumi was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. The prize recognizes his work in the field of autophagy.

Autophagy is a system for recycling cellular components. Ohsumi achieved the world’s first formal observation of the process around 30 years ago. His work using yeast cells opened the door to a deeper understanding of autophagy mechanisms. Other studies have since revealed the vital role they play in the lives of plants and animals. This knowledge is expected to support the development of various new treatments. Potential applications include cancer, neurological disorders and age-related diseases.

While Ohsumi’s initial work drew little attention, his perseverance led to groundbreaking results. The professor has said he wanted to do something no other researcher would do. He has also emphasized the importance of basic research in his success.
