Yoshinori Ohsumi Awarded Nobel Prize
In October, Professor Yoshinori Ohsumi was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. The prize recognizes his work in the field of autophagy. Autophagy is a system for recycling cellular components. Ohsumi achieved the world’s first formal observation of the process around 30 years ago. His work using yeast cells opened the door to a deeper understanding of autophagy mechanisms. Other studies have since revealed the vital role they play in the lives of plants and animals. This knowledge is expected to support the development of various new treatments. Potential applications include cancer, neurological disorders and age-related diseases. While Ohsumi’s initial work drew little attention, his perseverance led to groundbreaking results. The professor has said he wanted to do something no other researcher would do. He has also emphasized the importance of basic research in his success.

Latest Leap Second Creates Controversy
On June 30th, a leap second was added to Coordinated Universal Time, creating a minute including 61 seconds. A leap second is used to adjust the difference between the current standard time and solar time. The first is based on atomic clocks and the second on the Earth’s rotation. An international body is responsible for ensuring a leap second is added in unison worldwide. However, a number of problems exist. One second makes a significant difference in online stock and currency trading. Computers and network systems may also lose synchronization. The leap second was introduced in 1971. Since then, machines have advanced dramatically, making the problem increasingly complex. If leap seconds are abolished, clocks will not synchronize accurately with the Earth’s rotation. This will become a major problem in the long term. A solution to the issue must be found in the near future.

Pacific Islanders Move due to Sea Level
A town on Taro Island in the Solomon Islands has decided it will move to a neighboring island due to rising sea levels. All 800 residents will be relocated and new schools, hospitals and other facilities will be built. The town is actually the provincial capital for its area and the move is expected to take several decades. However, officials say it is the only way to keep the community safe. The island is less than two meters above sea level and is threatened by rising waters caused by global warming. There are fears the island could be submerged by a tsunami. This is the first relocation of an entire Pacific island population with all services and facilities due to coastal hazards. As a disaster prevention measure, the move is likely to save many lives. However, it also illustrates the increasing threat posed by global warming.
