In March, Japan’s health ministry announced time-limited approval for two medical products using iPS cells. It is the world’s first approval of iPS cell-based treatments.

The stem cells are created by culturing cells taken from skin or blood. They can grow into almost any cell type, increasing expectations for regenerative medicine and new drug development. One approved product is a heart muscle cell sheet for severe heart failure, developed by Cuorips. The other is a Parkinson’s disease treatment developed by Sumitomo Pharma. Both may become available under public medical insurance in several months.

During the seven-year approval period, the products’ safety and effectiveness must be verified through actual treatments. If confirmed, they may receive full approval. The milestone comes two decades after Yamanaka Shinya first created iPS cells in 2006.
