US Ends Zero Interest Rate Policy

On December 16th, the US Federal Reserve Board announced the end of its so-called zero interest rate policy.

The FRB has held its interest rate near zero since 2008 to support recovery from the global financial crisis. The measure has been highly effective, supplying a large amount of money to the market. The domestic economy has recovered strongly, with both job creation and consumer spending on the rise. As a result, the FRB has decided to raise the interest rate by 0.25 percent. Analysts expect the US economy to absorb the increase well. However, concerns remain about its impact on world markets.

Any rise is likely to attract international funds to the US, weakening investment in other countries. This could be highly damaging for emerging economies if their currencies fall. The FRB is hoping its policy of gradually raising interest rates will minimize instability in the world economy.
